  IDC Preparation

PADI IDC Prerequisites
In order to participate in a PADI IDC you must meet all the following prerequisite requirements:
  • Be certified as a PADI Assistant Instructor, PADI Divemaster, or as an instructor with another recreational diver training organization.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be fit for diving and submit a medical form signed by a physician within the last 12 months.
  • Have been a certified diver for at least six months
  • Have logged at least 60 open water dives with experience in night, deep and navigation prior to beginning the Instructor Development Program.
  • Have at least 100 logged dives prior to entering the Instructor Examination.
  • Submit proof of CPR training within the last 24 months.*

    * For those whose CPR / EFR training has lapsed an update is included in the IDC Prep course or one can be arranged prior to or in conjunction with the IDC - check with Bruce to see what can be scheduled for your IDC.
Required PADI materials for the IDC
  • Up to date Instructor Manual
  • NEW IDC candidate Workbook
  • Best of the Undersea Journal
  • Open Water and Confined Water cue cards 1999 ed,
  • Open Water Training Dive Lesson Preparation Slate 2001 Ed
  • Confined Water Lesson Preparation Slates 2001 ed
  • The Law & the Diving Professional the Business of Diving
  • RDP both table and wheel versions.
Highly recommended is the Instructor Crewpack which contains most of this material in an attractive carrying bag at a reduced price.

Also VERY useful especially for preparing your presentations at both the IDC and IE are a copy of the various PADI Student manuals: "GO Dive" (Open Water Course) manual, Adventures in Diving (NEW edition), "Rescue Diver Wanted" manual and the "Dare to be Challenged" Divemaster manual.

Note: Although these materials are available from Bruce, try and get them as early as possible as the more time you have to familiarize yourself with them prior your IDC the better.

Preparation for your PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC)
The key to a relaxed PADI IDC is to come well prepared. Being well prepared is crucial to success and lessens the workload during the IDC and allowing you to concentrate more on DEVELOPING rather than learning.

Check that you have
all the necessary documentation
Certification cards or certificates of all certifications from Open water to Divemaster / Assistant Instructor. If you are missing any please contact PADI immediately and get the course certification date, instructor name and number, and your student certification number.
If you run into any problems please let Bruce know as he is familiar with the various PADI offices and their personnel.
Photocopies of any non-PADI certifications that you might have as you will need to submit these to PADI with your IDC paperwork at the I.E.
Your Padi Medical Certificate signed by a Doctor to hand in for the IE. You may download the form and either have it signed by a Dr. in your own country or in Kenya when you arrive.
Your logbook(s) showing proof of 60 logged dives for the IDC and 100 logged dives for the I.E.
4 passport photos to Day 1 of the IDC.

Dive Theory
Make sure that you are confident with your level of dive theory knowledge BEFORE the IDC.
Question: On which PADI course is Instructor Level Dive Theory taught ?
Answer: The IDC – WRONG answer!
Answer:
The PADI Divemaster Course – CORRECT answer!
The best way to do this to own a copy of The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving and Diving Knowledge Workbook (The CD-Rom Encyclomedia includes both) and work your way through it along with the Divemaster exams. You will have ample to keep you busy during the IDC without having to worry about dive theory questions such as "what are partial pressures" or "how do I find minimum surface intervals with the RDP Wheel ?"
You know when you have mastered it when you can not only arrive at the correct answer - but also explain WHY each of the other answers is wrong.

Relax
Remember the more prepared you are the less of a workload you will have during the IDC, leading to a more relaxed and enjoyable IDC.
Purchase and familiarise
yourself with IDC materials
Make sure you have purchased and are familiar with all the new materials required for your IDC, especially if you never used them as a student (see PADI IDC Materials). Answer the quick quizzes, student concepts, quick reviews, course Quizzes and Exams etc and make sure that you are comfortable with the style of questions that PADI uses.
If you do not have the NEW 2003 instructor manual make sure that you have and have implemented all Training Bulletins Updates up to date.
If you are missing any you can download them from the Members section of www.padi.com.
Buy your own copy of the Candidate Workbook and read through the pages "How to use this Workbook."

Independent Learning
Go to Section 1 "Independent Learning" of the Instructor Candidate Workbook.
Complete the 16 IDC Knowledge Reviews which MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE START OF THE IDC!!! At the beginning of each Knowledge Review you will find listed the necessary pre-study reading assignments you need to read before answering the knowledge review.
These assignments can be found in: The Best of the Undersea Journal, your Instructor manual, 2001 IDC Candidate Workbook, The Law & the Diving Professional and the Business of Diving.
If you are doing the Prep Extra your Course Director or IDC Staff member will lead you through all the reading assignments helping you understand and become familiar with PADI standards, PADI educational philosophies, provide some training suggestions and other background information necessary to complete your IDC program.

IE exams in over 20 languages
I.E. exams in languages other than English need to be ordered from PADI well in advance of the IE, so let Bruce know as early as possible if you wish to take the examinations in an alternative language.
During the IE exams are available in over 20 languages. Should the exam not be available in your native language you will be credited with extra time.
Extra time will not be credited for exams available in a native language when they were not requested in sufficient time prior to the I.E.

Get wet …
Make sure that you are confident with your level of dive theory knowledge BEFORE the IDC.

Dive as much as possible – nothing replaces real life experience.
Assist your PADI instructor as often as possible.
Practice all your skills – especially the 20 skills of the PADI skill circuit.
Concentrate especially on:-buoyancy skills:
  • hovering and fin pivots
  • out of air skills: Buddy Breathing and Alternate Air Source both stationary and swimming
  • Controlled emergency swimming ascent (CESA)
  • Removal skills: scuba unit and weight belt - both at the surface and underwater.
Remember although an Open Water Diver can "do the skill", this is usually a long way off from the "demonstration quality" expected of an Instructor.
Review the skills on the PADI Open Water video or CD-Rom.
When was the last time you DEMONSTRATED any of these?
If you won't have time to practice these consider joining the IDC Prep Course as it's a relaxed way to get some guided practice before the IDC itself starts.
If possible get a PADI instructor to watch you perform Rescue Diver Exercise #7: "Unconscious Diver on the surface." You can review an excellent demonstration of this on The PADI Rescue Diver video.
Again a demonstration and workshop of Rescue Diver Exercise #7 is included in the IDC Prep course.
Check all your dive equipment and make sure everything is serviced, up to date and ready for action.
